So traveling 36+ hours across hemispheres is generally not a fun thing to do. But we had to in order to get to Benevides. Out of D.C. we flew to Miami where we then flew to Rio de Janeiro. From there we flew back up north to Belem, and then took buses to Benevides. Despite the toll traveling so much took, we did get the chance to experience a really neat layover in Rio while we were traveling down. ![]() First of all, Rio de Janeiro is an absolutely beautiful city. It's like a city built upon dormant volcanoes on a tropical coastline…sort of like right out the movie The Incredibles. The rampant slum sections aren't pretty, but the touristy areas make everywhere else I've been look really lame. These pictures are from the world famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio (which was recently voted as one of the modern 7 Wonders of the World). This statue was pretty amazing ( If you want to find more info about it, go here). It's a 130 feet tall and really benefits from being on the pinnacle of a mountain. It was a really neat experience and the view of Rio from the overlooks was absolutely stunning. Rio is the most beautiful, topographically and geographically diverse city I've ever seen.
