    October 25, 2004 - Top 5 videogame music intros/main themes

Ok, this is it folks…thee list.  Here are my top 5 most favorite videogame intros/main themes of all time.  Yes I'm a complete nerd and listen and buy videogame soundtracks, but after listening to these classics, how can you blame me?  And because I'm so cool, you can download these songs right from here and bask in their glory all yourself.        There's a possibility I'm forgetting some classic and great ones, but these I know for sure are top tier when it comes to videogamedom.  So without further ado, here's the Top 5:

    5. Shadow of the Beast (1.5mb) - 1989 Psygnosis - Commodore AMIGA

           ·   Talk about ahead of its time.  Shadow of the Beast turned heads with it's creative atmosphere, beautiful graphics, and legendary music.

    4. NBA Jam (player select theme) - 1993 Midway - Arcade

           ·   If there was ever a videogame musical piece that urged my soul to just get down and dance, this was it (aside from the Dance Dance Revolutions of the world).  Classic gameplay, real NBA players, and awesome sound and music!

    3. Speedball (2.3mb) - 1988 Bitmap Brothers - Commodore AMIGA

           ·   Two ways to describe this futuristic sports simulation: rad and cool.  This game could be a crapper sometimes, especially during the latter levels, but you'd always come back for more.  Just like many AMIGA games, awesome graphics and superb sound.  R.I.P. AMIGA 2000.

    2. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (1.6mb) - 1997 Konami - Sony Playstation

           ·   Konami proved with Castlevania: SotN that 2-D game were not dead!  This game is argued to not only be the best in the vast Playstation library, but the best of the 32-bit generation, right up there with Super Mario 64 and Metal Gear Solid.  The music, each track fully orchestrated, is so good I imported the soundtrack from Japan.  How's that for emotional attachment.

    1. Streets of Rage - Yuzo Koshiro (3.6mb) - 1991 Sega - Sega Genesis

           ·   Despite the fact that Streets of Rage was a blatant rip-off of the Capcom's quarter-eater Final Fight, it definitely held its own as a "must have" title for the burgeoning Sega Genesis.  Tried and true beat-em-up style gameplay combined with city punks and big bosses with a world-class soundtrack courtesy of the Genesis's Z80 co-processor pumping out 8KBytes of RAM and 6-channel stereo sound gave us a truly great game worthy of a couples continues probably preceded by a couple cuss words.
