November 11, 2004 - It's nice to be a hitter So I played my first indoor soccer game in a while tonight at the Dulles Sportsplex in Ashburn, VA. I haven't played indoor soccer, or any soccer for that matter, or any organized sport for that matter, in a little less than a year I guess. And I must say it was a heck of a lot of fun. Sure we lost 13-6 and a bunch of Hispanic guys whooped us up a little, but it still was tons of fun. First off, I'm playing in a pretty competitive guys league, so the play is quick and the stakes are higher, than co-ed soccer like I was playing last year. The facilities are top notch indoor ones, and the fields were professional Astroturf-like. I felt like I was playing on the Metrodome field or something. Anyways, what was best about it, and what is usually the best part about my soccer career, is because of my size, I can basically play hockey/soccer. Man was I plowin guys left and right! Haha, it was great. Sure these Hispanic guys were all phenoms with the ball, but when they all the sudden looked up to see a 6'3", 200lbs. train coming at them, well let's just say 'you're not gonna juggle your way out of this one hombre'. I actually played goalie the first half because our dedicated goalie wasn't there. I let in 4 goals, which ain't that bad in indoor, but two of em were my mistake. Oh well. I didn't score any either, but that's ok. I played defense mostly, and I found out quickly that I'm far from being in "soccer" game shape. The reason it's nice to be a "hitter" though is because I realize I'm getting a little older these days. Sure, 25 is basically my exact prime, but I haven't been training like it is, so I'm lacking in many departments like cardiovascular endurance, muscle endurance, ball touch, and just game awareness. But I will say one thing has remained; the knack to rough up a couple guys. And the great thing about that is that because of my size, I'll always be able to do that. The skill guys and the fast guys, well time will catch up with them one day in their late 20's and 30's and their touch ain't gonna be as good anymore and their 40 times will get a little slower. But my hitting? Well I don't think age will affect that too much. Sure a little, but there's something about being a hitter that doesn't go away. I guess I just realized that tonight. Sure my touch wasn't up to par and my stamina was pretty pathetic, but I sure was roughin up a couple guys up into the boards and getting penalties and the such. My one friend, whom I played youth soccer with, mentioned to me after the game that my play reminded him of the old days. Some more nice saves would've been nice, a few goals would've been cool too, but that comment my friend made to me after the game was the best I could've received. Check out my game schedule here. It's a really cool place. I'm on Team Phoenix. |
