December 6, 2008 - Proposition 8 (The Gay Marriage Ban in CA) And Pop Culture Hey all. I debated whether bringing this up, but being the last link of the "Original 6" (in my family) to pop culture I felt it may be helpful to you all to know the environment we really are in - and the ones your kids are going to be growing up in...very soon. I know there's a fine line between being in the world and being of it, but I think we should at least try to understand their "argument" so we can respond, as Peter tells us, with "gentleness and respect". This isn't as much about how we should respond, but more how we should process it, as Believers. Many people for gay marriage have been pretty upset since Proposition 8 passed in CA during the Nov. 4th election. A lot in Hollywood have been upset also and the lastest, most popular viral video on the net (basically a net video that I guarantee every kid from the ages of 14-22 has seen) is this one, a “mock” musical featuring a handful of popular actors and actresses. You may recognize a few or you may not, but know there are a handful - and these are some of the very same performers our youth generation looks up to as favorites. Anyways, the video is extremely irreverent (not in a crude way, but a spiritual way). I'm almost surprised, though I shouldn't be, at how nefarious and subtle Satan works through it. The video, though a mock musical, does have an aura of seemingly logical and reasonable undertones. “Love, don’t hate”…”The Bible has a lot of archaic teachings”…”Christians are just a bunch of hypocritical, self-righteous, uptight, boring people”. A lot of the sayings and themes seem really reasonable and often the Bible is seemingly contradictory or outdated, as well as Christians being hypocrites. And who wants to hate instead of love? Satan is so brilliant how he casts the covert “secular/relative” worldview in a positive, almost attractive light; and on the flip side how negative a "Biblical/absolute" worldview seems. He’s even more brilliant in his marginalization of Christ; relegating him to mere kitsch. I guess my hope in posting this is: Here is another "mock" video advertisement of a similar nature. As sarcastic as it is, and despite its somewhat faulty logic, they do bring up a good point - and another reason why non-believers don't pay any attention to what a lot of Christians have to say because they don't walk the talk. A call to holiness even more. |
