    May 12, 2006- Look up more…

I was outside late one night the other day.  It had been days since I had been outside on a clear evening in the cool of the oncoming summer.  As I was taking my little pleasant stroll I looked up, and I stopped.  I stood there gazing at the heavens in all their wonderment.  It occurred to me that we look up far (in the figurative and literal sense, but I'm being literal here) too infrequently, and in the process we distance ourselves from the Creator.  Our society and our lives are so concerned with the people and "things" around us that we forget the God above us.  Just looking up at the heavenly hosts is one way to maintain that perspective.  Just looking up will humble you if you're honest with your comparison to the heavens.  Some people believe the people around us are the most important, and that love, brotherhood, charity, and being "good" are the keys to life.  Though they are important, that are not the most.  I believe none of those things are truly accomplished unless we take care of the first and most important priority, and that's our relationship with our Creator.  Yes, yours and my relationship with our Creator is more important than ourselves, our familes, our friends, our churches, our jobs, and everything else around us.

So look up more on starry nights - and revel in his glory, delight in his heavens, and exalt his sovereignty.  Take the insights of these writers as they gazed up the Z-axis as far as the naked eye could see and beyond:

    "Listen to this, Job;
stop and consider God's wonders." -Job 37:14

"Lift your eyes and look to the heavens:
       Who created all these?
He who brings out the starry host one by one,
and calls them each by name.
Because of his great power and mighty strength,
not one of them is missing." -Isaiah 40:26

After you look up, then look down in reverance…and consider the God that gives you breath, gives you life, and gives you forgiveness - is the same God that would be just in casting us all away into Hellish eternity.

    "O LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
       You have set your glory
       above the heavens.
From the lips of children and infants
       you have ordained praise
       because of your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.
    When I consider your heavens,
       the work of your fingers,
        the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
the son of man that you care for him?" -Psalm 8:1-4
