May 8, 2006- NHL playoff hockey So the other day I was on the treadmill and to my delight, Game 5 of the Wings vs. Sharks @ the Joe was on; start of the 3 period Wings up by 1. The next 20 minutes was pure playoff hockey bliss. Intensity out the wazoo, muckin' and grimin' everywhere, fights and skirmishes breaking out after almost every play, odd man rushes out the wazoo, goalies standing on their heads, amazing skating, crowds going bonkers, announcers going bonkers, and hockey how it's meant to be played. The experience was a bit surreal I must shamefully admit, because it's been so long since I had experienced it's greatness. It was like coming back to a long, lost brother or something. Sure it wasn't my beloved Flyers, but it was playoff hockey; the best, most intense, yearly, playoffs of any sport. I must also shamefully admit that I, for all intents and purposes, left my beloved Flyers for dead this season - because essentially they left me for dead as a fan. It started off dreadfully and ended even worse. Sure I can use the excuse that I was so busy with work and school, which is justifiable, but I did not put as much effort into my Flyers as I should have...but I digress, this is about NHL playoff hockey not me and my eternal dissapointments as a Philly fan. Anyways, this Game 5 had everything and it was so exciting. You could almost feel the intensity and electricity pulse through the television. I had never run 2 miles so easily in my life. Sure it was only a quarterfinal series, but gee those guys were playing like there was no tomorrow. I know most players in most sports work like crazy in the playoffs…but hockey players take it up a notch even. I so wanted to be a Wings or Sharks fan at that moment. I so wanted to cheer with all my might. Actually I so wanted it to be my Flyers on the TV like days or yore…like the halcyon days of the Legion… I digress again… Oh Flyers, come back next year…please come back… |
