July 3, 2007- The "cute couple" comment
Have you ever heard someone say, "They're an ugly couple together." No it's always, "They make such a
cute couple." This isn't to say they don't actually look like a cute couple per se, but the whole patronization compliment is similar
to making comments about babies. Let's be honest, there are some really ugly babies out there. But never in a millions years would
you tell the parents that their baby is really ugly. Que the Seinfeld "The Hamptons" episode…
Again, I think there are a lot of couples out there that look and/or fit great with eachother.
Then again, like the baby issue, I think there are a lot of couples that don't fit very well with eachother (for whatever reason)
and may not even look
"cute" together. I'm not trying to be insensitive here, just trying to be honest. Sometimes people say complimentary things
just to be nice, and not because they actually believe it. And sometimes I think people flatter themselves too much, myself included.
I guess the moral of the story is to not put all your identity in
what other people tell you about the external side of your relationship, but more what people (those you admire and respect) think
about it internally and how you feel about it.
I just hope I have cute babies.
