July 16, 2009- Quick Thoughts #2: Part 1 I've started 'Quick Thoughts' to add more substantial blurbs related to the external articles I link to. Hope you find it deeper. This edition will include articles related to Sports/Cars and Entertainment/Games. Sports/Cars: Despite how much its fanatics argue, sport will never be big in this country -Despite not wanting to accept this assertion, I believe it to be true. Not so much because of any deficiencies soccer may have, but more because of the saturation already of professional baseball, basketball, the mighty juggernaut that is the NFL, and to a lesser extent pro hockey, PGA, NASCAR, etc. Foreign countries just don't have these huge leagues and program infrastructures. Soccer, or futbal, is gospel in most other countries in the world…they just don't really have many alternatives. Because of that fact, I agree that soccer will never make a solid, solid dent into the American market. Which is a shame because of how exciting the sport is and of hopefully continued future success for the U.S. National team. But let's be honest soccer fans; the sport, domestically or internationally, will never be able to compete consistently with the Big Three/Four in the 'States. Side note: As great and spectacular as the Spain win was, and it was, what the heck was up with the second half against Brazil, and more recently against Haiti in the World Cup qualifier?! As much as I love my country's team, I think Dr. Jeckl had more consistency. -So I'm really excited about the Philadelphia Union joining the MLS next season. They're sure to have an awesome fan base and hopefully will follow the Soul as a minor Philly pro team to win a championship. Go Union! ![]() -For those of you that know me, Ellis's words resonate with me a great deal. Good job Ellis. -All I need is one of these to complete the "dream". -I'm sorry, but the F40 wins hands down because it comes from the era when sports/exotic cars were built for purity. There was no traction-control this or computer-management that. It was you, the vibrating accelerator pedal, 478 horses, and the tarmac; pure driving exhilaration not contaminated by artificial synapses. My friend once commended me for owning older cars and "for sticking with it and not buying some modern turn-key bore." I'd have to concur : "This is not some oil-rich Arab sheik, his equally rich cousin and their play things. Renault took two of its R28 Formula One cars out on the Dubai highway during the Renault F1 Roadshow. The FIA's Vice President for sport, 14-time Middle East Rally Champion and later Renault R28 monumental wrecker, Mohamed Ben Sulayem was first to rocket the F1 down a closed off stretch of Dubai highway. The most impressive was when Renault demonstration drivers, Romain Grosjean and Adam Khan raced a pair of R28 F1 cars along the open stretch of road. As if that wasn't enough the duo then took out a pair of 2009 Renault Meganne Trophy Cup cars to do battle with." -Oh, so that's what a 7.3-liter V12 sounds like... -Oh so beautifully terrorizing. -Man, the more I learn about who Michael Jordan is and was as a player personally, the less I think I like him. You've heard those stories from the Bulls and other players in the league about how he always had to have the ball, get the last shot, get the glory, etc., and now things like this only further his unattractive competitive compulsion. Dude, you can't compete at this level anymore, give it up. You won a hundred freaking championships and MVPs, why can you just be content?! Jordan was a great ball-player but his lack of contentment throughout his career and even till today just does not appeal to me as a fan. I won't even get into his gambling and baseball "career". I guess a lot of celebrities actually begin to believe their own hype. BTW, congrats David Robinson! -No words... -Good article on Tony Dungy, and revealing of some of the criticism he, and other sports celebrities like him, receive. I commend the author LZ Granderson, whom is black and gay, for his apology and bridging words between opposing worldviews. Entertainment/Games: ‘Revenge of the Fallen’ punishes the brain and most of the senses -I'm all for resurrecting old cartoon franchises, and I'm all for popcorn flicks that don't tax the brain too much. That said Transformers 2, and 1 for that matter, are just messes of metal and loudness that "reboots" the original source material too much and overcompensates for almost 30 years of societal changes by adding way too much sexual innuendo. This review is just one of a plethora to point out its many faults. I want my $12 back, as well as a few brain cells that were killed by the incessant banging and clanging of alien amalgams. Read the article below and you'll have a better idea at what I'm getting at. 10-year-old with cancer couldn’t go to theater, studio brought DVD to house -Pixar gets major props for this move. -If you search a bit, there's actually quite a few website out there that have incorporated the shenanigans of the Konami code secretly in the website. It's a big conspiracy...just like Big Boss?...Anyone get the Konami connection? Anyone??? -Very informative and interesting. Only for tech-geeks though I guess. -If you've got a lot of time and a penchant for video game history like me, this is a pretty interesting read. -The original The Day The Earth Stood Still is so superior to the recent one. |
