July 27, 2004 - My life goal has been accomplished...I finally obtained the Amulet of Yendor, ventured back to the surface, and beat the timeless game Rogue.

-If you grew up at all during the 80’s and played video games, you most likely heard of or played the game Rogue, an evolutionary graphical extension of the text based RPG game Adventure.  A groundbreaking PC game at the time, Rogue stretched the limits of the day’s 286’s CGA enabled powerhouses and featured deep and engaging role-playing gameplay full of strategy and risks.  Addictive as crack, Rogue has stood the test of time and still carries a large cult following.
    To summarize Rogue’s gameplay:

This classic dungeon-crawl uses ASCII characters (letters and some symbols) and basic colours to depict a rogue's epic adventure through the infamous Dungeon of Doom. Using a host of weapons and items, he explores the dark dungeons one step at a time in turn-based mode. There are 25 different types of monsters, symbolized with their initial letter (L for Leprechaun for instance) and they have different abilities and modes of attack. The dungeons are different each time you play the game. In their deepest level the greatest prize awaits...

The ultimate goal is to find the Amulet of Yendor on Level 26.  The Amulet allows you to go up stairs, something that has been magically blocked throughout the game (you are only allowed to go deeper into the dungeon beforehand).  This way, you can go back up all those stairs to the surface to escape the Dungeons of Doom.

My first experiences with Rogue were on my family’s Sanyo 286 EGA computer.  I prolly was around 6 or so.  My brother Derek brought home a black-and-white game called Rogue one day and I was hooked.  In fact, my whole family used to play this game.  My brother John claims to have obtained the Amulet of Yendor once and that he didn’t realize you were supposed to go back up the stairs after that.  He further claims he kept going deeper down the dungeon and finally got stuck in a room full of dragons and medusa’s or something...  I’m skeptical at best.

Anyways, 18 years after starting my quest, almost an incalculable amount of failures and deaths, I have finally fulfilled my destiny and defeated the Dungeons of Doom once and for all!  To further verify my gallant and dauntless quest, I’ve provided a couple screenshots of my victory!  That’s right “Congratulations!”

    There's the Amulet now

    All mine baby!

    Ready to go home

    I am the Champion!

Look at all that loot and booty! (no, not that kind of booty)

18 years of seeing killed by a is now sweet retribution!

What am I going to do with my life now...I feel a loss of purpose.....
