August 28, 2009- 5 Reasons Not to Have Health Insurance Often times those that lack health insurance are vilified and failing to secure some is seen as grossly negligent. Though there are many justifications as to why going health insurance-less is ill advised, not to mention your loved ones having to fit your medical expenses if you should incur any above your cash flow, you may be surprised to find some reasons as to why it's a good idea not to carry health insurance. Here are five that I found sensible. Do they outweigh the reasons for having…perhaps not, but you perhaps will think differently than you had before. For the record, I understand these benefits aren't applicable to every person and case. 5. Save money -This is the most obvious benefit of not carrying health insurance. For me it isn't super expensive, but I hear of people that pay multiple hundreds of dollars a month for health insurance. That's a lot. I mean unless you're always at the doctors, these just seems like a lot of money thrown at a "potential". Think about it…say you pay $150/month for health insurance…that's $1,800 a year. That's some hard cash, especially if you never get seriously sick/injured or need to go to the doctors. 4. Less dependence on doctors and drugs -Not sure how accurate it is, but I saw a stat one time that said the average American is on 8 different medications at any given time. Geez, talk about Brave New World. I'm not saying a lot of those may be necessary for certain individuals, but I can almost guarantee a lot of those aren't necessary people only take them because "they're there". Not having health insurance forces you to be content with over-the-counter generic medicines that probably are fine for most people and their ailments (though not all I understand). Further, think of all the lost time and productivity from people going to the doctors all the time. Again, sometimes it's necessary, but sometimes…I mean do you really need to go to the doctors when you have a cold or a sore neck bruise (apart from them hanging around for a while)? What ever happened to "walk it off" or "rub some dirt on it"? 3. The anti-gamble -Is not health insurance merely another form of "hedging your bets"? You're essentially paying money to protect your investment/bet (in this case your life) in order that you won't lose as much if the "bet" doesn't work out. Not having life insurance may be seen as the gamble, but you're not paying any money so how are you gambling? In fact, I'd argue not having insurance represents more 2. Increases faith -This is the touchy portion of the subject. I could say here that people that don't have health insurance trust more in God that he'll protect them (which there is an element of truth in that), but the retort will most assuredly be that the rain does fall on the wicked as well as the righteous. Well my response to that is ok, what's your point? Perhaps if the "rain" does fall on you in terms of health, God has allowed that to happen ("bad" things aren't always Satan's work ya know) and is working in you and refining you through the struggles (financial included) that will probably ensue if you don't have insurance. Ever think of that? Does having insurance reduce, or eliminate, God wanting to refine you to rely more upon him through a trialsome experience? Is our lot in life to make life as easy, trouble free, and insuranced bet-hedged as possible? Just questions… 1a. Life goes on -For millennia people lived their lives with no health insurance, and from what I can tell many people lived full, vibrant lives. We seem to now be in a society that is so health fearful. Have you seen all the prescription medicine commercials these days? Heck, I qualify for a dozen of them…but do I need them? Are we more slaves to our prescriptions and doctors than we would be if we didn't have any health insurance out there? Sure people get sick and people die, but should we live in such fear of it? Life goes on folks and the sun will rise tomorrow…God willing. 1b. Saves the economy -Nuff said. |
