Today's science fiction fantasy: a Christian perspective - (Derek Wojciech) (I recently had an email conversation with my brother Derek about modern science fiction fantasy movies and what have you. Anyways, he has some very profound things say about it.) It is quite interesting how sci-fi has melded with the supernatural/fantasy over the past decade. I noticed the trend quite awhile ago feeling that partly people are interested more in the supernatural but at the same time there is less respect, as the 'taboo' of either playing with religion or supernatural is practically eradicated. It bothers me the comic book and movie/tv writers pull stuff from traditional Christianity (ie Hellboy, Constantine, Prophecy, Blade, Buffy, etc.) and distort it or take it for granted. What happens is Christianity is becoming...'just another myth' to this next generation. I appreciate movies that have spiritual elements...but it can be very dangerous to play with. You and I can objectively evaluate what is true/false and even enjoy the movie from that perspective. I used to like that series Roar set in Celtic times where one of the bad guys was Longinus (the solider who had the spear of destiny). It's a fine line when a writer/director can use Christianity in a sphere of proper respect. *Bonus Battlestar Galactica review! Have you been watching the new Battlestar Galactica series on Sci-Fi Channel? I must admit is has been great so far with involving stories, characters and FX. The sexual overtones are a bit heavy and clearly this is adult programming...but there is a strong spiritual element in the series. Though ironically it's the Cyclons who believe in 'one god' (more radical Islamic in nature) and the colonials are polytheistic (patterned after Greek gods). The religious element is quite evident but controversial too. I haven't quite decided where the writers are going with it but it makes for some good thought and discussion. Again you and I can evaluate it from an informed base. I highly recommend you check it out. You can rent the miniseries dvd and watch the first episode online at www.scifi.com/battlestar. My $.02 for the day *lol* |
